Our Magic Carpet

My husband loves grass! The kind you plant in your front yard, not the kind you smoke - ha! Every year he plans the planting of our winter yard as if it was a national holiday. There are many procedures involved and usually an entire Saturday is set aside in October for this traditional ritual. We always have to drive in and out of our garage very slowly, admiring the yard. Doug always says, "It's like a magic carpet".

I will never forget the year he informed Brent, who was just a little boy, that he was going to have the best Saturday of his life spreading crap on our front yard. I mean isn't that the coolest thing in a little boy's life - being completely dirty in cow droppings? I seriously remember that day and how horrible those two looked and smelled, but they were so dang happy. As the grass came in and our yard was seriously the prettiest in the neighborhood, Doug & Brent would just beam with pride. Now Doug's assistant yardsman is in Peru where he isn't thinking of grass seed, smelly yards and lawn mowers - or is he?

This reminds me of when we lived i Washington. Our grass was GREEN all year except for the summer. I watered and watered...it's not that hot up there...what was wrong? My home teacher drove by one day while I was holding the hose and said, "Sister Loose. You can water til the cows come home but that grass is shade tolerant.it is dormant right now and will come back as soon as the clouds do!"

Oh.

Shade tolerant. I guess that's how they have grass in the northwest!

So...what does Doug plant? We are tucking our bluegrass away for the winter! Sad.
