Goodbye Summer ~~ Hello Fall!!

Even though it is September and in some states this would mean the start of Fall, it is still 105 degrees here. It does make it hard to start thinking about Halloween and Thanksgiving when you're still putting sunscreen on and your AC unit is on 76 . . . . but we are slowly approaching Fall here.

I love Fall. I use to love ending Summer and watching the kids go back to school. Picking out new backpacks, pencils and new outfits. You have to have a new outfit for the first, second and third day of school, right? It was fun to meet your teachers and walk around the school to see if you could map out your classes. I found it fun and exciting, of course I'm sure my children didn't. Well my last child is now in college. He took some classes this Summer and did really well at M.C.C. and now he's back with a pretty full schedule for Fall. We have a tradition at our house that we take pictures on the first day of school at our front door. Here is my college son!

Gone is the backpack with the popular cartoon character or sports figure. Gone are the crayons, pencils and packed lunches. I don't even get to drive him to school and wave goodbye to him. Nope he's a Freshman in college now. Mr. Independent. I know that soon he'll be completely gone and I'll only hear from him by email, letters and occasional phone calls. Oh how I wish I could slow this time down and hang on tight to the apron strings that seem to be quickly slipping from my grasp.

I thought with Brent going back to school and my nieces and nephews children going back to school, I would make a special cake and take it over to my sister-in-law Dianne's house on the Sunday before school started. You know, to celebrate. My mother use to do cartwheels in the yard the day before my sister and I went back to school to celebrate (now you know where I get my craziness . . . its inherited). Well I use to be able to do cartwheels, before I started having back problems, so now I just bake. I saw this really cool cake pan at Michaels and had to buy it. It's a giant cupcake! Isn't it cute?

You can't really tell how big it is by this picture, but it is big. It takes approximately two cake mixes. I think those who were there enjoyed it - I know the kids did.

So "Happy Back to School Month" to everyone.

I am so sad we weren't there to get to celebrate with that cake. It is wonderful. The kids would have been in heaven.
