I Did What??!!

Yes - I did it! I ran (and some walking) the 2010 Mesa Mi Amigo's 10K Turkey Trot!!! Yes, that is 6.3 miles. I crossed the finish line in 1 hour 18 minutes. I wore number 1809. I guess I started this tradition many years ago when the kids were little. I would dress them warm, pile them into the car and drive out east to Red Mountain Park on Thanksgiving Day to watch them run. For the first few years I just watched. My kids loved it, especially Melissa. Then I slowly became a participant instead of an observer. I did the 1 mile Fitness Walk and then the 2 mile Fun Run. Every year Melissa & Brent would beg me to do the "real thing" and I always used some kind of excuse - my age, my back, I'm out of shape, etc. (the back really was a problem for a couple of years).

Then this year I decided I wasn't going to make any excuses and I wanted to do it. I wanted to do it to prove to myself that I was capable of doing something hard. I also wanted to shock my family, maybe "wow" them. There were so many family members and friends who thought I was crazy and wouldn't be able to do it. This just made me want to do it more. It was hard. Really hard. A couple of times I thought I might just stop, but apparently I have some competitiveness in me and so stopping just wasn't an option. I think I was successful in shocking a few people. I didn't beat the turkey, but maybe I might next year! Never say never!
