Brent's Got A . . . . . . .

Melissa has been bugging me (I use that term lightly) about when am I going to blog about Brent's "you know what"? Well today is the day!

Last Tuesday night Brent and I set out to buy some goodies for Father's Day for Doug and then hit the gym. Well we never made it to the gym. For good reason. With Doug's gift (golf bag & club) in the trunk of the car, Brent proceeds to tell me about the boat that was for sale that he really wanted. Doug had apparently saw a fishing boat for sale on Craig's list and told Brent about it. Brent, while driving home, started telling me about it and how Doug had said "we" (Doug & I) could help Brent with 1/2 of the payment. Brent wanted to know what I thought about it . . . well since I knew nothing about it, but the words "fishing boat" made me curious, I said, "Let's go see it". So we went home, dropped off the Father's Day gift. Doug didn't want to go with us, but Aaron did. So we drove by and picked up Aaron, and Melissa decided to tag along.

Here is where the drama sets in. If anyone knows Melissa you know that she is one big worrier. Yes, even more than me. She worries about everything. She was petrified that we were walking into a scene like "Friday the 13th" or "The Chainsaw Massacre". She repeatedly told us that she had 911 programed in her phone and all she had to do was hit the send button and she would have the Mesa P.D. there in a flash. She worried that it was all a scam and that this guy with the boat was going to steal all of our money. Needless to say, it was a long trip to East Mesa.

Well I'm happy to say, it was nothing like that. In fact the boat was a steal to us. It was in great shape. Really a nice boat, well taken care of. It was on a homemade trailer that was really made well. The man, I'm happy to say, wasn't a killer and he was really nice. In fact he even lowered his price a little. So Brent and I (I own 1/2), bought the whole rig. Brent was great - his first major purchase and he asked all the right questions. I'm really proud of him. I know he was worried about it all, especially without his dad being there, but he cowboyed up and did it.

Now the trip home . . . well that was another story. What we should have done is put Melissa in the boat and pulled her home that way. Little Miss Worrier now was worried that Brent was driving too fast while pulling the boat, hitting the speed bumps in the trailer park as we were leaving, etc. It didn't help that we couldn't hook the trailer's brake lights up because we lacked a connector, but also because the trailer wasn't even licensed. She was positive that a police officer was just going to jump out at any given moment, pull us over and arrest Brent and then he would have a record and he wouldn't be able to serve a mission. Yes, we heard it all - the list was long. I have to admit I too was a little nervous about not having trailer lights and it not being licensed, but I knew we could talk ourselves out of ticket.

So here is the purchase. It's a nice little package when it's hooked up to Brent's truck and all. I for one can't wait to put it in the water and take it out to the middle of the lake and start fishing. Brent has since taken it to the MVD and the trailer is officially legal. He took the boat on the same day to Fish & Game and it is registered too. I can almost taste the big mouth bass or trout we can now catch, not to mention the wonderful time Brent and I can share floating on a peaceful lake talking and sharing some deep feelings we have. This is going to be a great summer!!

hey...someone's got to worry that the person who we know nothing about is safe. If something did happen, I would have been the hero because I was ready for ANYTHING!!

Do you realize that I have NEVER been fishing in my life...not once! I think I need to talk to Jusitn about a family camping trip and some fishing!

I'm pretty impressed your family bought a boat! My son graduated this year too-he dragged his dad & I down to look at a 4-wheeler! (This is the second one for our family). My husband went out 4-wheelin' last week and now has his leg in a cast! This would of been a different story-if we'd bought a boat :) In Alaska, we'd go fishin' every holiday...

Love the story...and love the memories you are going to create with Brent. I love to fish and I have some great memories of it growing up. A couple years ago Kent bought me a new fishing pole for Christmas. We have yet to use it.

Melissa cracks me up.
